Folding Seats / Spider Bars

RPA aims to continuously address its passenger capacity issues and consequently put in place a modification programme whereby the central, upright hand-holds would be replaced by split version thereby adding to standing passengers’ comfort and safety.

Prior to the implementation of this, RPA’s Rolling Stock Manager, on a visit to Alstom’s (the tram manufacturer) plant in Barcelona noted the robust tip-up seats which were being fitted onto vehicles for Tenerife.

It was decided that similar units be fitted to the Dublin vehicles and the two modification programmes (i.e.Tip-up seats replacing 4 fixed and that of the Central Upright Handhold be replaced with split versions) were combined. These Spider Bars give passengers extra comfort will standing in the centre aisle of the tram.

The first tram with the new arrangement entered passenger service on Monday 5th March 2007. All Green Line trams have now been modified and all Red Line trams were also modified as they were lengthened. These works were completed in May 2008.

The improvement is very noticeable for passengers. Please click here to view images of additional features.
