Luas Commercial Opportunities

Luas Commercial Opportunities

RPA is responsible for determining, arranging and managing all commercial opportunities on the Dublin Light Rail system (Luas). Our principal aim is to develop opportunities that will benefit the passenger (e.g. retail space), will increase utilisation of our assets (e.g. advertising space) and will benefit the community (e.g. public art partnership). The supplementary income derived from these initiatives will be reinvested back into the system thereby allowing Luas to continuously improve the value of its service offering.

Commuters at Luas Stop

Luas has attracted tremendous interest and has very high awareness in the community. Recent market research revealed:

  • We carried 28.4 million passengers in 2007, which represents an increase of 10% on 2006. Patronage on the Luas Red Line grew by 15%, while patronage on the Luas Green Line grew by 4%. We expect that patronage will continue to grow in 2008.
  • Trams covered a total of 2.75 million kilometres in 2007; 1.75 million on the Red Line and 1 million on the Green Line.
  • Over 99% of services scheduled were delivered successfully in 2007.
  • Luas SmartCard usage for 2007 was up 45% on 2006.
  • Average usage of the three Park and Ride facilities on the Green Line was 89% and the Red Cow Park and Ride on the Red Line had 48% usage in 2007.
  • Frequency of Travel - 68% of passengers use Luas 4 times a week and 32% of passengers are occasional users of Luas.
  • 53% of passengers use Luas to commute
  • 36% of passengers use Luas to shop
  • 30% of passengers use Luas to pursue leisure activities
