Luas Citywest (Line A1) Belgard-Saggart Construction Update No.5

Work Progress

Area 1 (Outer Ring Road to the N82)
Site clearance, utility protection, boundary treatment, drainage, ducting, track formation works and track laying is now complete through this area. Track laying through the N82 road crossing is also complete. The construction of Cheeverstown Stop, Citywest Campus Stop and the park and ride facility are progressing well. The construction of the substation at Cheeverstown is progressing well and works to Citywest Link Road are nearing completion.

Area 2 (N82 to Saggart) and Area 3 (Cookstown Way to the Outer Ring Road)
Site clearance, utility protection, boundary treatment, drainage, ducting and track formation works are now complete in these areas. Works have also commenced across the junction at the entrance of Carrig Court estate and track laying is expected to be complete in the coming weeks. Track laying is complete from Fortunestown stop to the end of the line at Saggart. The construction of the platforms at Fortunestown and Saggart Stop and the adjacent electrical sub-station are progressing well.

Area 4 (Works at Belgard and Cookstown)
Works to the adjacent high pressure water mains, construction of the new trackworks and the two new island platforms are complete. The line from Red Cow to Tallaght was closed over the periods 10-14 and 17-18 April to allow for the installation of turnouts at Belgard and also the junction between the existing Red Line and Line A1 at Cookstown, This is to facilitate our future customers who wish to travel between Tallaght and Saggart in conjunction with the provision of a direct service between Saggart and the city centre. It is planned that the line from Red Cow to Tallaght will close over the weekend of the 12th June 2010 to erect the canopy at the new Belgard Stop.

DURING THIS WEEK-END POSSESSION THAT WILL INVOLVE NIGHT WORKS, THE RED LINE WILL CLOSE BETWEEN RED COW AND TALLAGHT AND A REPLACEMENT BUS SERVICE WILL OPERATE OVER THIS SECTION AS FOLLOWS:

  • SATURDAY 12TH JUNE 2010 - REPLACEMENT BUS SERVICE
  • SUNDAY 13TH JUNE 2010 - REPLACEMENT BUS SERVICE
  • MONDAY 14TH JUNE 2010 - RETURN TO NORMAL LUAS SERVICE

Every effort will be made to control and mitigate any disturbance arising from the above works and RPA apologises for any inconvenience and disturbance that these works may cause.

Looking Ahead

Design works have commenced on the new stop equipment, power supply including overhead power lines, traffic signal works and other systems which are necessary to run a top quality Luas system. The work involved under this contract will be completed by early 2011, and will then be followed by a period of testing before the line is opened to passengers mid 2011.

Area 1 (Outer Ring Road to the N82)
Paving works at Cheeverstown and Citywest Stop are nearing completion. The erection of OCS support poles is well advanced, as is the construction of the park and ride and the substation at Cheeverstown with these woks expected to finish in the coming months. Landscaping works will also commence in this area later in the year.

Area 2 (N82 to Saggart) and Area 3 (Cookstown Way to the Outer Ring Road)
Boundary works will be completed in these areas in the coming week. The construction of the platforms at Fortunestown and Saggart Stops and the adjacent electrical sub-station is progressing well. Road markings, signing and lining will commence at the road junctions in the coming months. Landscaping works will also commence in this area later in the year.

Area 4 (Works at Belgard and Cookstown)
Works are well underway at Belgard Stop on the existing Red Line . The construction of the new trackworks and the two new island platforms are complete and this will allow the canopy to be installed in the next month. Once installed paving works will begin. There will be further adjustments to the current access/exit arrangements at Belgard and passengers will be informed in advance.

All of the work to be carried out will be in accordance with the final approved plans for the line which have been the subject of much planning and consultation over the course of the last number of years. Click here to view plans and other documents relating to the line.

This €150 million project is being developed by means of a partnership between the public and private sectors. The private sector consortium which has been formed to partner the Railway Procurement Agency in the delivery of Luas Citywest is Citywest Luas Ltd (CLL). CLL is a group of local landowners and business interests (comprising of Davy Hickey Properties, Harcourt Developments Limited and Mansfield Group).
