Luas Pedestrians ACT SAFELY THINK SAFELY

Luas_and_Gardai_team_up_for_safety

Luas today teamed up with the Gardai in a joint safety message to the public, in particular pedestrians. The Luas safety message is simple; Pedestrians Act Safely, Cross Safely– Don’t walk out in front of an oncoming tram. Only cross at designated pedestrian crossings.

One of the main reasons for trams having to stop suddenly is the need for drivers to apply the emergency brake due to pedestrians, primarily in the city centre, walking out in front of a moving tram, distracted often by their mobile phone and headphones.

Brian Brennan, Managing Director of Veolia Transport, Luas operator, today appealed to pedestrians “to stop, look and listen. Remember the safe cross code!  The consequences of walking out in front of a tram is not only a dangerous thing to do for a pedestrian but there is also a knock on effect for passengers on board a tram, as the tram has to stop abruptly.”

Veolia with the Gardai wish to increase pedestrian awareness of safety and are happy to support the Garda advertising campaign aimed at pedestrians entitled- “Don’t be hasty- get across safely”

Both messages will be advertised on Luas and across the city for the month of October and further safety tips are available on www.luas.ie
