Luas Line C1 Construction Update 17

LUAS DOCKLANDS (Line C1) Construction Update No. 17

TRACK WORKS

Between La Touche House and George’s Dock Bridge
The track works has commenced from Amiens Street towards Commons Street. Our contractor Mpact, will construct the new drainage connections kerb lines and footpaths initially; followed by the track works.

Between George's Dock Bridge and Commons Street
Works are ongoing on the southern side of the road between Georges Dock Bridge and Commons Street. Works will entail deep drainage connections, final road & footpath layouts, Georges Dock Station Platform and track works. There will be some temporary modifications to roads and footpaths to accommodate these works and we ask pedestrians and motorists to obey allsigns for their own safety.

Between Commons Street and Guild Street
Works on the footpaths and roads are progressing well on the northern side of Mayor Street Lower between Guild Street and Commons Street junction. By mid-November, works will swap over to the southern side of the street to start deep drainage connections, track and platform works. The traffic flow remains one way from Commons Street towards Guild Street and will run over the new road lane which is part of the final design for Luas Line C1.

Between Castleforbes and New Wapping Street
Track works on Mayor Street Upper from Spencer Dock to Point down are progressing well. The Diamond Crossover between Castelforbes and the Point has been delivered to site and installation is nearing completion. It is currently planned to switch the traffic flow from the north side of Mayor Street Upper to the south side between Castelforbes Road and New Wapping Street junctions. This switchover is due to happen in early November upon completion of the final road and footpath surfacing on the southern side.

Please use the new road layout with caution as the new Luas tracks are now part of the road surface. It is important that cyclists cross the tracks as close to a right angle as possible to avoid their bicycle wheel getting caught in the Luas track.

May we remind people that the current one-way traffic systems on New Wapping Street and Castleforbes Road will remain in place for the duration of the works.

BRIDGE WORKS

Spencer Dock Bridge
During October the contractor successfully completed the concrete pours for the viewing galleries (see image) on both sides of the bridge deck. In early November the team will be stressing the bridge spine. This is effectively tightening the steel cable network to give the bridge its full strength. We will start fixing parapets and put the waterproofing layers on the bridge. Once we remove the wooden casings, shutters and scaffolding from the bottom of the bridge, the manta ray shape of the bridge will be really noticeable.

DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL - WORKS ON GUILD STREET
Work on the Guild Street Road Reconstruction scheme is currently in its final phase. All works are due to be completed in early December 2008.

CHANGING STREETSCAPE

As part of Luas Line C1 Docklands Extension the streetscape in the area will change. RPA contractors will need to clear some trees which we are commited to replacing by planting additional trees in the Docklands area once construction is complete. Cobblestones on Mayor Street Lower will be taken up and stored for use later as part of the final design.

All RPA Luas projects are finished to a high architectural specifications and the new streetscape will reflect this commitment. Wherever possible the historic character and heritage of the area will be retained.
