Luas Broombridge (Luas D)

Phase 1: Identify Route Options

RPA has identified options for Luas Line D, which focus on route alternatives, stop locations, connection options to Luas Line BX and the way in which the planned line would cross Constitution Hill into Broadstone.

This first stage in the process of developing Luas Line D commenced with the identification of feasible route options within the study area from O'Connell Street to Broombridge via Broadstone/Grangegorman.

Two alternatives have been identified for the on-street section from O'Connell Street to Broadstone. Route Option 1, to Broadstone, runs via Parnell Square West on to Granby Row, St. Mary's Place North and Western Way. A Luas Stop would be located on Parnell Square West. Route Option 2, to Broadstone, runs via Parnell Street on to Dominick Street Lower and Dominick Street Upper. A Luas Stop would be located on Dominick Street Lower.

There are two options for crossing Constitution Hill to access Broadstone; a bridge structure over the road or a 'straight through' crossing at road level similar to existing road junctions along Luas Red and Green Lines. Both of these crossing options are feasible with either Route Option 1 or Route Option 2.

With the bridge option crossing for Constitution Hill, a stop would be located in front of the existing Broadstone building at a level that would be slightly raised above the existing ground level in this area. This would be necessary to provide a minimum clearance height underneath the bridge for vehicles travelling on Constitution Hill. With the 'straight through' alternative crossing of Constitution Hill, again a stop would be located in the front of the Broadstone building but it would be at a lower level to the bridge option and similar to the existing road level of Constitution Hill. The stop would be covered over with access to the stop for pedestrians directly off Constitution Hill.

North of Broadstone Luas Line D will follow the alignment of the disused railway cutting with stop locations, generally in the vicinity of Cabra Road and Fassaugh Road. An interchange stop with Iarnroid Eireann Maynooth railway line will be provided at Broombridge. Provision will be made to enable a future possible extension to Finglas at some future date.
