In November 2000, following preliminary studies, RPA launched the Luas Cherrywood public consultation process. This focused initially on selecting the best overall route option for Luas Cherrywood which would be an extension of the existing Luas Green Line from the existing terminus at Sandyford Stop to Brides Glen.
During this initial phase of public consultation RPA used a mix of print and radio advertising, newsletter distribution, website communications and public open-days. This was designed to prompt and facilitate input from members of the public and other interested parties in relation to their views on the important question of selecting the best overall route option. RPA published maps showing possible route options identified, possible stop and park and ride locations and information relating to the criteria which would be used in selecting the best overall route option.
In August 2006 following discussions with Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, RPA proposed extending Luas Cherrywood further south east to Bride’s Glen.
Following further public consultation and careful consideration of inputs received from members of the public and other interested parties RPA selected the best overall route option which is a combination of options outlined at the start of the public consultation process with the terminus located further east than originally envisaged.
The public consultation process revealed the high level of positive support for Luas Cherrywood and Luas in general. The route selection decision is evidence of the genuine nature of the consultation process.
