This is the first stage in the process of developing Luas Citywest. The overall route option identification process for Luas Citywest began with the identification of a study area that covered all reasonable alternative routes for the proposed Luas Line to Citywest.
Following preliminary studies RPA launched a Public Consultation process for Luas Line A1 in February 2006. This focused initially on proposals for a line which would extend the existing Luas Red Line from Belgard to a point west of Fortunestown Lane, Citywest.
This was supplemented with other information relating to the proposed route including possible stop locations, and Park & Ride facilities.
During this initial phase of public consultation RPA used a mix of print and radio advertising, newsletter distribution, website communications, meetings with local interest groups and public open-days. This was designed to prompt and facilitate input from members of the public to let us know their views relating to the possible route. RPA considered these submissions from members of the public when designing the best overall route.
In August 2006 following discussions with South Dublin County Council and local property developers RPA proposed extending Luas Citywest further west to Saggart, Co. Dublin.
The best overall option finally selected was the only option outlined at the start of the public consultation process, though this was extended beyond the initial last stop to serve Saggart Village in County Dublin. RPA had not initially considered terminating the line at this location.
Following further public consultation RPA confirmed that the proposed Luas Citywest would be extended further west to serve the Saggart area.
