Project Overview Metro Airport / Swords (Metro North)
Metro Airport / Swords will connect the Fingal County town of Swords and town-land of Belinstown to Dublin City Centre. The selected route for Metro North serves a number of key destinations including the airport, hospitals, universities, retail centres as well as residential and employment districts.
Metro Airport / Swords will be 18km long and is expected to carry some 34 million passengers a year once it is operational.
A reliable frequent service will bring passengers from Dublin City Centre to Dublin Airport in less than 20 minutes and Swords in less than 30 minutes and will avail of a range of interchange opportunities with Luas, Irish Rail services, bus services and park and ride facilities.
This proposed metro line is a Public Private Partnership Initiative.
Metro Airport / Swords is a key element in the creation of a fully integrated rail based public transport network as envisaged in Transport 21.

This is the first stage in the process of developing Metro North. This stage is concerned with the identification of broad route corridors and the principal destinations that Metro North will serve. The main vertical alignment alternatives: tunnel, viaduct or street level running, are also considered at this stage.
The main route alternatives were evaluated against a number of objectives, including compliance with transport and land-use policy; environmental impact; social and economic benefits; transport integration; construction and operation costs; operational safety and efficiency and construction risk and efficiency.
Following the selection of the preferred route, the design stage considers detailed design options for individual stops, and the associated track alignment between the stops, along the preferred route corridor.
RPA placed the Railway Order documents on public display on 17 September 2008 at a number of locations agreed with An Bord Pleanála for a period of six weeks. During the display period any party may lodge written submissions with regards to the proposed project with An Bord Pleanála. The display period ended on 29th October 2008.
At this phase in developing Metro North project, RPA contractors and sub-contractors will begin to physically construct the approved metro rail line based on the detailed design drawings.
Following the successful pre-operational testing of Metro North, RPA will begin passenger operation services of the new line through a selected operator.
