Metro North Latest Update - November 10th 2011
The Irish government announced the Infrastructure and Capital Investment 2012-16 Medium Term Exchequer Framework. In it the government stated that:
“larger public transport projects proposed for the GDA (such as Metro North and DART Underground which were to be advanced as PPP projects, but which require very significant Exchequer contributions) cannot proceed at this time. They are being postponed for consideration in advance of the next capital programme which will be drawn up in 2015 and will cover the period from 2016 onwards. These projects are being deferred, not cancelled: they remain key elements of the overall integrated transport strategy for the GDA and will be progressed when fiscal and market conditions improve.

RPA welcomes the government decision to proceed with Luas BXD and notes that whilst Metro North has been deferred the way is clear for a review of the project in 2015.

Decision on Metro North
RPA met with the Minister of Transport on April 14th where he confirmed that decisions on which transport projects would proceed would be taken after the completion of a comprehensive spending review. This is expected to be finalised in October/November. We recognise and support the need for the spending review in the current economic climate. In the meantime, we encourage you to stay informed by following Metro North on Facebook and signing up for Metro North updates by contacting mary-denise.fitzgerald@rpa.ie

Maintenance Depot for Metro North
On 27th October 2010, An Bord Pleanála approved the Metro North Railway Order. In doing so, An Bord Pleanála has required RPA to relocate the maintenance depot from its proposed location at Belinstown, north of Swords.
RPA has considered a range of alternatives for relocating the depot. RPA has now concluded its public consultation exercise with relevant stakeholders and the resulting preferred location is to the north of the Dardistown Stop (Dardistown North). An EIS will be prepared for the proposed depot and an application will be made to An Bord Pleanála for a Railway Order to permit its construction.
