1,000 Thoughts on Metro North - Market Research
Ipsos MRBI on behalf of RPA recently surveyed 1,000 people in the Greater Dublin Area on Metro North. Here is what Ipsos MRBI discovered;
- 85% felt that Metro North will be a good addition to Dublin’s public transport system
- 51% of people surveyed use the city for shopping or leisure once a month or more; 89% of those felt that Metro North construction would not put them off coming into the city.
- 85% felt the construction of Metro North would have little or no impact on them.
- Only 6% felt that the construction of Metro North would have a lot of impact on them and 72% of them said this would not put them off using the city centre for shopping and leisure during the construction phase.
- 81% of people who thought Metro North construction would have a lot of impact on them felt that it would still be a good addition to Dublin public transport system
- When Metro North opens 32% felt it would actually encourage them to shop and socialise more in the city centre
- When Metro North is open, of the people surveyed 29% would use to come into town to socialise; 26% to commute to work; 20% to shop; 15% to travel to school/college; and 5% to go to Dublin Airport.
Metro North Top Three Concerns About Construction

RPA is committed to keeping Dublin open during Metro North construction.
Access will be maintained to ALL premises so people can continue to enjoy their city experience. Access for servicing and deliveries will also be maintained and ALL existing car parks will be accessible throughout the construction of Metro North. Utility works will be carefully planned to avoid service interruptions. Project updates will be made using advertising, leaflet drops, Facebook, Twitter, text messages etc.

Metro North Roadshow – November 2010
30 November 2010 – We just finished our Metro North Roadshow in the city centre. The Roadshow was made up of four presentations on Metro North in the city centre focusing on O’Connell St, Westmoreland St, St Stephen’s Green and Parnell Square. The presentations show how the city centre is going to look like during Metro North construction.

Enabling Works
Enabling works contracts are ready to sign. Once Government approval to start is obtained works will commence within 3 months. This includes enabling works contracts for utility diversions; heritage works, including relocating a number of monuments either to the National Museum of Ireland or into storage for safekeeping; a temporary bridge over the river Liffey to accommodate traffic during construction of some of the Stops in the city centre; the construction of a part of the Stop box at the Mater campus; and other ancillary works to assist in ensuring the site is available for the contractor to carry out the main works.
We have a Framework Agreement in place with eight main contractors for the provision of utility diversions and civil works (RPA7178 Utility Diversions and Civil Works Framework Agreement).
An award notice was issued when it was set up which can be found at eTenders (you need to be registered with eTenders to view)

RPA have received tender submissions for the St Stephen’s Green, O’Connell St, Heritage and Parnell Square utilities packages. The Ballymun utilities package was issued for tender on the 20th December 2010. The Mater Hospital tender will be issued early on 2011.
Work Opportunities
Once contracts have been awarded the details of the successful tender will be posted on www.rpa.ie and interested applicant should contact the successful contractor regarding possible employment opportunities.
Main Works
The main works will be carried out following the completion of the enabling works and will include the remainder of the work required to complete Metro North including the tunnels, Stops, trackwork, railway systems and landscaping.
Metro North is being delivered under a Public Private Partnership arrangement. This means that the private sector predominantly finances the construction of the project. The two shortlisted bidders are;

RPA is committed to ensuring all Metro North works are carried out safely and within the constraints set out in the railway order. The contractors responsible for any aspects of construction will be required to meet the highest standards possible and ensure work is carried out in accordance with good industry practice. Furthermore RPA will be employing independent engineers to ensure contractors comply with all environmental requirements.
During the construction phase, RPA will issue regular construction updates to local residents and businesses and is committed to providing up to date information using a number of platforms including email, the RPA website, newsletters and public meetings. As construction gets closer more information on this will be made available.
