This is the first stage in the process of developing Metro West.
An extensive public consultation process on the route selection for Metro Orbital (Metro West) commenced in November 2006.
Following preliminary studies RPA launched a public consultation process which involved publishing possible route options. This was supplemented with other information relating to the proposed line options including possible stop locations, depot, and Park & Ride facilities. RPA outlined the criteria used in selecting the best overall route option for Metro West.
After studies of possible Metro West routes the RPA identified two main route options.
- Route Option 1 runs west of the M50 via Clondalkin, Liffey Valley and Blanchardstown.
- Route Option 2 runs west of Clondalkin via East Lucan and Blanchardstown. Various sub-options were also identified.

During this initial phase of public consultation RPA used a mix of print and radio advertising, newsletter distribution, website communications and public open-days. This was designed to prompt and facilitate input from members of the public to let us know their views relating to the possible route options. RPA considers these submissions from members of the public when selecting the best overall route option.
In July 2007, following public consultation on the above route options, RPA announced the emerging preferred selected route corridor for Metro West.
The best overall option finally selected was broadly Option 1 as outlined at the start of the public consultation process with a sub-option selected in the Clondalkin area.
