Metro Orbital (Metro West)

Phase 3: Line & Stop Design

Having selected the best overall route option based on public consultation, RPA in this phase focuses on the precise alignment, stop locations including arrangements to ensure access to stops, related structures and traffic management solutions for Metro West.

Metro West Design Update 2 - December 2009

In November 2008, RPA announced details of the preferred route for Metro West (Design Update No. 1) setting out in a general way the proposed location of the route, stops, P&R and other infrastructure. In December 2008, RPA released Outline Concept Design Drawings for Metro West. During 2009, RPA has developed the design of this route and has consulted with the public and other stakeholders in relation to the design proposals along this preferred route

Early in 2009, RPA announced the conclusion of a design competition for the Liffey Valley Bridge and the selected design has been well received since its announcement in February. Consultation has been ongoing  with individual residents and land owners, groups and stakeholders along the route to seek to develop designs that address the various concerns raised.

RPA is now at a stage where a general consensus is emerging with respect to the best overall design for the route and a preliminary design for Metro West is now nearing completion. This preliminary design will form the basis of a Railway Order application for Metro West which includes the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the project. The preliminary design will also form the basis of contract specifications for the construction of the scheme.

Metro West Emerging Design Area and Work Front

This design update seeks to provide greater detail to you on the emerging preferred route of Metro West and should be read in conjunction with the set of drawings now presented and numbered BMW0000PR1000 to BMW0000PR3023. These drawings supersede all previous drawings presented.  Click here to view or download these drawings. These drawings are presented by three areas:

Within each of these areas, the drawings are also separated into smaller sections called work fronts and by way of example, area MW201 Tallaght to Liffey Valley contains 5 work fronts: MW201A to MW201E.

Metro West Emerging Design - November 2009

The preliminary design drawings have been prepared to represent the design concept in summary form and additional drawings are under preparation for various plans and elevations at stops, structures, P&R etc. These will be included in the Railway Order application in due course. The preliminary design drawings now presented indicate the proposed location and layout of:

  • The track;
  • The stops;
  • Substations (needed to supply power to the overhead lines);
  • Car parking and P&R;
  • Boundary treatments;
  • Road diversions and alterations;
  • The depot;
  • Structures (bridges, walls etc.);
  • Earthworks (cuttings or embankments);
  • Overhead Lines and Supporting poles.

The preliminary design drawings add detail to the schematic map of the preferred route released in November 2008.

Next Steps – Railway Order Application

The next steps in the process will be to finalise the preliminary design, based on feedback received on this update, and complete the EIS and Railway Order application documents. It is envisaged that these documents will be concluded during the first half of 2010 and a Railway Order will be lodged thereafter.

As part of the Railway Order application, RPA will be preparing additional documentation that will provide greater information to that on the drawings now presented. All this information will be made publicly available for inspection as part of that process and, like any planning application, you will have additional opportunity to make observations on the proposals. Examples of the information and documentation typically included in a Railway Order application can be found on our Railway Orders Published Documents Page.

You are now invited to make any observations or suggestions on the proposed design prior to the submission of the Railway Order application. Please also feel free to contact RPA to talk to a relevant engineer or arrange to meet with us if necessary.
