Luas Red and Green Lines Finds and Discoveries
Completed Archaeological Investigations:

Archaeological investigations were carried out by RPA and archaeological consultants on behalf of RPA before and during construction of these two Luas lines.
Archaeological sites discovered on Luas Red line (Line A) include a prehistoric complex, an Early Christian souterrain as well as some medieval activity at Ballymount, Co. Dublin and post-medieval remains at Tram Street, Phoenix Street and O’Connell Street Lower.
There were no significant archaeological sites revealed on Luas Green line (Line B). However, archaeological monitoring did reveal such features as post-medieval limestone walls, a stone culvert and a refuse pit on St. Stephen’s Green West, as well as basements and coal cellars associated with18th and 19thcentury houses on Harcourt Street.
RPA has published an archaeological newsletter “Under the Tracks” summarising the archaeological discoveries on the existing Luas Red and Green lines.

Current and Proposed Archaeological Investigations:
RPA have received a grant of planning permission from DCC (2145/10) to permanently widen the Abbey Stop Platform on Abbey Street Lower. A Condition of the Planning Permission requires that licenced archaeological monitoring of all ground disturbance works is carried out. This work was undertaken in September 2010 and was archaeologically monitored under licence by the RPA archaeology team monitored. Post-medieval demolition deposits were identified. A report on the results the archaeological monitoring is forth coming. There are currently no further archaeological investigations planned for the Red and Green lines.
